Six months ago, the European Commission said yes to My Voice, My Choice, the European Citizens’ Initiative supported by 1.2 million people demanding EU safe abortion care.
For the first time, the Commission confirmed that EU funds can be used by Member States to improve access to abortion. From now on there is a EU funding pathway that governments can use to cover abortion services, including for women who must travel or cannot afford care.
But in the last six months none of the governments decided to use it for safe abortion care. We also did not yet secure a dedicated EU budget line that would guarantee stable, long-term support for abortion care across Europe.
That’s why we will go to Brussels. Again.
Next week our team is going to Brussels where they will have meetings with Commissioners Hadja Lahbib and Roxana Minzatu, responsible for the My Voice, My Choice initiative. We will meet with Members of the European Parliament who can help us pressure governments of member states. And we will organise a press conference where we will ask governments to act and protect reproductive rights of millions of women.
Only by pressuring politicians and making the campaign visible can we successfully implement the My Voice, My Choice mechanism in at least one member states. That’s why it’s so important that we meet with the politicians, that we organise a press conference and make the campaign as visible as possible.
This work must happen in Brussels. We are raising funds to cover accommodation and travel cost, as well as core staff coordinating meetings with EU institutions and working with journalists.
Without sustained pressure, this opportunity can stall. With the right resources, we can turn it into concrete access for women across Europe.
Donate to help us keep pressure on member states and make EU funding for abortion care a reality across Europe.
