On February 26, the European Commission will decide whether it will support the demands of My Voice, My Choice and take action to ensure access to safe abortion care for every woman in Europe. The Commissioners responsible for this decision have refused to meet with us before deciding.
We have been informed that the draft decision is written with a negative attitude that signals continued inaction from the EU.
We are therefore taking this conversation to the public.
We are raising funds to publish ads in major European newspapers, addressed to Ursula von der Leyen and the European Commission, calling on them to support My Voice, My Choice before the final decision is taken.
Today, more than 20 million women in the EU still do not have access to safe abortion care. Denying access does not reduce abortions, it increases unsafe ones. This is why 1.2 million citizens supported My Voice, My Choice through the European Citizens’ Initiative, with backing from the European Parliament, ministers from multiple EU countries, heads of state and legal and medical experts.
When democratic institutions refuse dialogue, starting a wide public conversation and visibility is the only option left.
